How to Use Pingdom to Test Your Website Speed

Hey, this is Sabrina lead trainer for Ballen Brands. Today I’m going to show you how to use Pingdom, a really cool, free tool to check the page speed on your website. Page speed is extremely important because if your website takes too long to load, oftentimes people will leave your website before they’ve even gotten the chance to view it.

Using Pingdom

The first step is to go to Pingdom, and once you’re there click on the ‘Tools’ button up at the top. Once you’re in there, you can type in the website that you want to test and choose where you want to test from.

You have a few options of where you can test from and I recommend testing as close to your area as possible but sometimes the queue is really long and it can take awhile to get the speed test done. One time I tried to select California, but I was 118th in line so I tried New York and it worked right away.

For this part, try out different locations and use whichever one that works better. Today I’m going to test from New York. We select that and hit ‘Start Test’. This may take a second, but this is running a test on how long it takes for the website to load.

Once that is done, you’ll see a summary at the bottom and all you want to look at is the load time. On this example here, the load time says 2.84 seconds, which is really good so we can be happy with that.

You want your load time to be 3 seconds or under. If it’s over 3 seconds, you run the risk of the visitor leaving before your website loads.

This is a free tool so be sure that when you create a page on your website, you are always checking the page speed before sending it anywhere.

What if My Page is Running Slow?

If your website page is running slower than it should be (over 3 seconds), then you may want to check your images and make sure your image files are not too large.

The file size for images we recommend is anywhere from 70 kilobytes to about 120 kilobytes.

You can also check any embeds that you added. For example, if you embedded a map, a video, or a review, sometimes things like that can slow down the page a little bit.

Also make sure to check your plugins – we realized that our website was running slow once and it was because of a plugin we had on there.Lori Ballen
